Type 440 is a Class 2, composite screened, three-core trailing cable designed for open
cut and surface mining where three pilot/control cores are required instead of a single
central pilot. Three EPR-insulated power cores are laid up around a centre filler, with
three elastomer-covered pilot conductors disposed into the outer interstices — the same
positions occupied by earth conductors in related types.
Rated 1.1/1.1 kV through 22/22 kV (U0/U), it is the three-pilot open-cut equivalent of the
underground Type 240. The composite Cu-wire screen provides collective earth fault
detection. Per AS/NZS 2802:2000, it is designated Class 2.
Pilot core damage under trailing flex: Three pilot conductors are interstitially disposed and protected by the composite screen and HD outer sheath, reducing exposure compared to exposed central pilots.
Screen conductance loss from strand breakage: Composite screen uses Cu wire interwoven with textile yarn over all separators; strand size increases with conductor size to maintain conductance requirement.
Insulation tracking at higher voltages: R-EP-90 insulation with semiconductive separator tape at ≥3.3 kV controls field stress concentration at the screen interface.
USE WHEN: Three separate pilot/control circuits are required for open cut surface trailing applications at 1.1–22 kV (e.g. interlock, monitoring and signalling simultaneously).
DO NOT USE WHEN: Underground coal mines (use Type 241/245). Where a single central pilot suffices (use Type 409). Where per-core IS earth fault detection is required (use Type 441).

440.1 — 1.1/1.1 KV
440.3 — 3.3/3.3 KV
440.6 — 6.6/6.6 KV
440.11 — 11/11 KV
440.22 — 22/22 KV
Flame retardant and self-extinguishing per AS/NZS 2802. HD-85-PCP or HD-90-CSP/CPE sheath resists ignition and limits flame propagation. Suitable for surface plant areas subject to fire risk protocols.
Rope-lay tinned annealed copper conductors per AS/NZS 1125. Minimum bending radius 8× overall diameter for trailing duty; 10× in fixed installations. Pilot conductors are also tinned Cu per AS/NZS 2802 Cl. 8.

Type 440 is the direct equivalent of Type 409 but with three interstitial pilot cores replacing the single central pilot. Where only one pilot circuit is needed, use Type 409. Where individually screened power cores are required, use Type 441 (1.1 kV Class 2) or Type 441 Class 1 (3.3–22 kV).
