TYPE 441

OPEN CUT & SURFACE MINING — CLASS 2 (1.1 KV) & CLASS 1 (3.3–22 KV)Semiconductive Screened — 3C Individually Screened + 3E Interstitial + Central Pilot — 1.1 to 22 kV

Type 441 exists in two distinct classes. The 1.1/1.1 kV variant (441.1) is Class 2, using R-EP-90 insulation. The 3.3–22 kV variants (441.3 to 441.22) are Class 1, requiring the higher-grade XR-EP-90 insulation and extra heavy-duty XHD sheathing — reflecting the more demanding dielectric and mechanical requirements at elevated voltages.

Type 441 is an individually screened, three-core trailing cable for open cut and surface mining. Unlike Types 409 and 440 which use a collective composite screen, each power core in Type 441 carries its own semiconductive elastomer insulation screen — enabling per-phase earth fault detection and suitable operation in high-resistance earthed systems.

Dual-class cable: 441.1 = Class 2 (R-EP-90 / HD sheath) | 441.3–22 = Class 1 (XR-EP-90 / XHD sheath)

COMMON FAILURE MODES & ENGINEERING RESPONSE

Individual screen degradation under repeated flex: Semiconductive elastomer screen is bonded to the insulation and designed for the trailing/reeling duty cycle; screen conductance is verified during manufacture per AS/NZS 2802.

Earth fault misidentification in collective-screen cables: Individual screening allows per-phase fault current to return on its own screen, enabling single-phase earth fault detection without tripping healthy phases — a key advantage over Types 409/440.

Insulation degradation at Class 1 voltages: XR-EP-90 (Class 1) provides superior long-term dielectric performance over R-EP-90 at 3.3–22 kV.

USE WHEN: Per-phase earth fault detection is required; high-resistance earthed systems; open cut applications at 1.1–22 kV where individual core screening is mandated by site or regulatory requirements.

DO NOT USE WHEN: Where collective screening suffices (use Type 409/440). Underground coal mines (use Type 241). At voltages above 22 kV (use Type 450/451).

BEHAVIOUR IN FLAME & FIRE

Flame retardant and self-extinguishing per AS/NZS 2802. Class 1 cables use XHD-85-PCP or XHD-90-CSP/CPE sheath for enhanced performance. Class 2 (441.1) uses HD-85-PCP or HD-90-CSP/CPE.

SELECTION — 441 VS RELATED TYPES

Choose 441 over Types 409/440 whenever per-core fault detection is required. For 3.3–22 kV with a composite (not semiconductive) screen, refer to Type 450/451 (Class 1). For underground individually screened feeder cables, refer to AS/NZS 1972 feeder types
